Oceania Cruises Debuts Sonata: A New Era of Luxury Travel Begins in Italy

The maritime world witnessed a significant milestone this year as Oceania Cruises celebrated the successful float-out of its newest masterpiece, the Oceania Sonata. This event, held at the renowned Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, marks the transition of the vessel from its dry dock to the water, signaling the final phase of construction for the first ship in the brand’s groundbreaking Sonata Class.

Weighing in at 86,000 tonnes and stretching 281 meters in length, the Oceania Sonata represents a bold evolution for the cruise line. It is the first of five planned sister ships that will debut over the coming decade. As the exterior structure is now officially complete, the focus shifts to the intricate interior craftsmanship and the high-end onboard experiences that have become synonymous with the Oceania name.

A New Standard for Luxury Accommodations

While the Oceania Sonata is nearly 30 percent larger than its predecessor, the Allura, it maintains an intimate atmosphere by adding only 90 additional guest accommodations. This decision emphasizes the brand’s commitment to providing more space and privacy for its travelers. The ship remains an adults-only sanctuary, featuring 695 meticulously designed rooms and suites. One-third of the total accommodations are categorized as suites, ensuring a high level of personalized service and comfort.

  • Owner’s Suites: For the first time in the company’s history, the ship will feature four expansive two-bedroom Owner’s Suites, perfect for luxury travelers seeking a residential feel at sea.
  • Horizon Suites: These new accommodations offer over 56 square meters of living space, including a walk-through closet and a massive private veranda.
  • Penthouse Deluxe Suites: Boasting 45 square meters, these rooms include floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to maximize ocean views and create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

This focus on suite-heavy inventory is designed to cater to the growing demand for ultra-premium cruising experiences, providing a sophisticated home away from home for discerning global explorers.

Culinary Innovation and World-Class Dining

Oceania Cruises has long been celebrated for its culinary excellence, and the Oceania Sonata aims to elevate this reputation further. The ship will host 13 distinct dining venues, including two brand-new concepts designed to tempt the palate of food enthusiasts. The inclusion of diverse culinary traditions is a hallmark of the new Sonata Class.

La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen are set to make their debut, offering guests a blend of classic French techniques and contemporary Japanese-Peruvian fusion. These will join fan favorites such as the Grand Dining Room and specialty restaurants like Jacques, Red Ginger, the Polo Grill, and Toscana, ensuring that every meal is a memorable event for guests onboard.

Exploring the World from 2027

The anticipation for the Oceania Sonata’s debut season is already building. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for August 7, 2027, departing from Rome and sailing to Trieste. This 14-day Mediterranean odyssey will visit iconic ports in Malta, Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia, offering guests a deep dive into the history and culture of the region.

Following its inaugural Mediterranean run, the ship will traverse the globe through April 2028, visiting more than 90 destinations. The itinerary includes the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, the architectural marvel of the Panama Canal, and the vibrant coasts of Mexico, Central, and South America. With four more ships following the Sonata—starting with the Arietta in 2029 and continuing through 2037—Oceania Cruises is making a substantial commitment to the future of high-end, destination-focused travel.
