India Unveils Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport Near Visakhapatnam

The Indian aviation sector has reached a significant milestone in 2026 with the inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram. This state-of-the-art facility, situated near the bustling coastal city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With commercial operations scheduled to commence on August 17, 2026, the airport is poised to redefine regional connectivity and stimulate economic development across India's eastern coast.

Spanning an impressive 2,200 acres, the airport is the result of a successful public-private partnership managed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited. As the third greenfield airport project for the GMR Group, it joins a prestigious network of international hubs. Strategically positioned as the "Gateway of the East," the airport is designed to serve as a vital link for northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha, supporting trade, tourism, and industrial growth in the region.

Innovative Architecture and Passenger Comfort

One of the most striking features of the new airport is its architectural design. The integrated passenger terminal is inspired by the "Parava Meenu," or flying fish, a local symbol that reflects the spirit of the region. The terminal currently covers over 77,000 square meters and is equipped to handle 6 million passengers annually. However, the project has been designed with the future in mind, featuring scalable infrastructure that can eventually accommodate up to 40 million travelers per year.

The facility is packed with advanced technological solutions aimed at enhancing the traveler experience:

  • Self-service check-in kiosks for reduced wait times.
  • Automated e-gates and sophisticated baggage handling systems.
  • Full integration of the DigiYatra platform for a contactless biometric journey.
  • AI-driven passenger services and a real-time operational monitoring center.

A Commitment to Green Aviation

Sustainability is a core pillar of the Bhogapuram airport project. The development follows international green building standards, incorporating energy-efficient systems and maximizing the use of natural light. To further reduce its carbon footprint, the airport features a dedicated 5 MW solar power plant, ensuring that a significant portion of its daily operations is powered by renewable energy. This focus on eco-friendly infrastructure sets a new benchmark for aviation projects in the country.

The airside facilities are equally world-class, including a 3,800-meter runway capable of hosting large international aircraft, along with a 55-meter Air Traffic Control tower. These capabilities ensure that the airport can handle a wide variety of domestic and international flight paths, establishing it as a major player in the global aviation ecosystem.

The Integrated Aerocity Concept

Beyond its primary function as a transport hub, the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is the centerpiece of a massive integrated ecosystem. The project includes a 154-acre Aerocity, which will house residential areas, industrial zones, and a specialized aerospace hub. This development is expected to become a magnet for investment in logistics and technology, creating thousands of new jobs and providing long-term benefits for the local community. As travelers prepare to land at this new destination, they are not just entering an airport, but a vibrant new center of commerce and innovation in Eastern India.
