As Europe implements its highly anticipated Entry/Exit System (EES) in 2026, the travel industry is facing a critical turning point. A comprehensive study by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals that potential border delays could have a staggering impact on European tourism, risking up to 41 million international visitor arrivals and a massive $45.4 billion in economic spending.

The research, which surveyed over 2,500 travelers from key source markets including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia, highlights a delicate balance between security and convenience. If regular wait times at Schengen borders stretch to three or four hours, approximately one-third of tourists admit they would rethink their holiday plans, either choosing other destinations or canceling their European trips altogether.

The Economic Stakes for European Tourism in 2026

The threat of prolonged queues at passport control is causing concern among hospitality and travel businesses across the continent. According to the WTTC, the willingness of international visitors to travel to Europe drops significantly when faced with unpredictable and lengthy waiting times. Here is how different nationalities react to the prospect of delays exceeding three hours:

• United Kingdom: 39% of British travelers would be much less likely to visit Europe.
• United States and Canada: 33% of tourists from North America would choose alternative destinations.
• Australia: 27% of Australian holidaymakers would avoid the Schengen Area.

While these figures present a challenging outlook, the travel sector is actively seeking ways to manage queues effectively. Industry experts emphasize that inefficient border management could tarnish the overall holiday experience, turning what should be a seamless journey into a stressful start to a vacation.

Strong Public Support for Biometric Borders

Interestingly, the study shows that travelers are not opposed to the technology itself. In fact, there is overwhelming support for modernized digital borders once people understand how they function. Only 6% of respondents expressed negative feelings toward biometric controls. Instead, travelers recognized several key benefits of the EES:

• Enhanced border security and safety (identified by 57% of respondents).
• Faster passport processing on future trips (highlighted by 52%).
• Increased confidence in overall border management (noted by 43%).

Furthermore, an impressive 87% of travelers stated they are willing to accept temporary disruptions during the initial rollout phase if it leads to smoother, more efficient journeys in the future.

Bridging the Awareness Gap

The primary hurdle currently facing European destinations is a widespread lack of information. Despite the imminent changes, more than half of international travelers (55%) report knowing little to nothing about the new Entry/Exit System. Additionally, 49% of respondents confessed they have no idea what will actually be required of them when crossing Schengen borders.

To prevent massive bottlenecks and ensure a smooth transition, industry leaders are calling for urgent collaboration between governments, border authorities, and the tourism sector. Experts suggest that the solution lies in making greater use of digital pre-registration tools, launching widespread information campaigns, and ensuring that border checkpoints are fully staffed and operationally ready. With proactive measures, Europe can protect its lucrative tourism sector and deliver the seamless experience modern travelers expect.
