New York's aviation landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation, and Air India is positioning itself at the forefront of this change. In a major announcement for 2026, the airline has revealed its plan to relocate operations to the upcoming Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This transition, slated for completion in 2028, is designed to offer a superior, seamless travel experience for passengers flying between India and the United States.

A Boutique Gateway to the World

Terminal 6 is the centerpiece of the Port Authority’s ambitious 19 billion dollar redevelopment of JFK. While the terminal will open in phases—with the first set of gates becoming operational during this year, 2026—the full facility is expected to be ready for Air India’s arrival in 2028. Unlike the sprawling terminals of the past, Terminal 6 is designed with a boutique philosophy. This means shorter walking distances from security to gates, intuitive digital wayfinding, and a curated selection of New York-inspired dining and shopping options that reflect the city's global character.

The New Flagship Maharaja Lounge

One of the most anticipated features of this move is the debut of Air India’s first flagship Maharaja Lounge in North America. Spanning over 9,100 square feet, the lounge will be located in a prime post-security position, offering breathtaking views of the terminal’s commercial concourse. This premium space will serve as a sanctuary for international travelers, showcasing the airline's signature hospitality through refined Indian cuisine and state-of-the-art relaxation facilities. This development follows the successful recent opening of a similar premium lounge at San Francisco International Airport, highlighting the airline's commitment to luxury travel.

Seamless Connections and Strategic Partnerships

By moving to Terminal 6, Air India joins a prestigious group of international carriers. The airline will be the 16th to call T6 home, aligning its operations with several fellow Star Alliance members. This proximity is a major advantage for global travelers, offering several benefits:

  • Easier same-terminal transfers for codeshare and interline flights across the Americas.
  • Unified services and lounge access for Star Alliance frequent flyers.
  • Strategic proximity to partners like Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Air Canada.
  • Integrated baggage systems and streamlined security processes for faster connections.

A Journey of Transformation

Since its privatization, Air India has been on a fast track to reclaim its status as a world-class carrier. The move to Terminal 6 is a key component of its global expansion strategy and long-term fleet renewal. Currently, the airline operates daily nonstop flights from JFK Terminal 4 to Delhi and Mumbai using its ultra-modern Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Operations at Terminal 4 will continue as usual until the official transition in 2028. With a massive record order for new aircraft and a focus on digital innovation, the move to a state-of-the-art terminal at one of the world's most iconic airports marks a new chapter in the airline's history, ensuring that the customer journey is elevated from the ground up.
